TURN IT OFF—AGAIN

Electronics continue to pull electricity even when turned off. So plug all electronic equipment into a power strip and turn it off for a final shutdown. Empty chargers also continue to consume electricity if left plugged in.

Use compact florescent light bulbs as replacement bulbs. As you replace appliances, choose Energy Star products; they meet strict efficiency standards. Turn off lights, music, televisions, and computers when you aren’t using them. Establish blackout days and leave electronics turned off to focus on other pastimes. Open the curtains and use sunlight for daytime lighting.

For electric heat and air conditioning, relax your thermostat setting by two degrees (or more, once you acclimate). Change filters monthly. Keep the dryer filter clean too. Air-dry dishes and clothes. Many types of stowable clotheslines or racks are available.

(Savings = $10 per month, $120 per year)
