Consigning antiques and furniture is a bit more complicated than consigning clothes, but the basic rules remain the same. You need to get items in the best possible shape before taking them in for an appraisal. This means cleaning the pieces well, maybe even touching up the stain or paint (or repainting altogether). You also need to replace any lost hinges or handles and tighten all the screws. Furniture consigners expect things to be in top condition before putting them on their floor. There are exceptions to this, like when you have an antique piece that shows a lot of “character flaws.” But even then it needs to be cleaned and treated with wood conditioner first. If you know the history of the piece, share it with the consignor. This is valuable information when trying to sell antiques.
