L’Amours was for many years the main east coast location for metal bands on tour to stop by, not unlike the many clubs that dominated the Sunset Strip scene during the eighties and early nineties.

LEATHER. Although it was not present to much of an extent on the early metal scene, where denim and typical rock star outfits of open shirts and an almost Victorian look prevailed, black leather (along with different variants such as pink, blue, and red) has become a staple of the heavy metal scene and was especially

prevalent in the early eighties. While black leather jackets had been traditionally worn by veterans of the armed forces, particularly the air force, the vogue of black leather in the general popular culture grew in the late 1940s, when returning GIs formed motorcycle groups (such as the embryonic Hell’s Angels). Leather soon

began to be associated with youth culture and rebellion by the early fifties. In the 1953 film The Wild Bunch, Marlon Brando helped codify the association between

leather and rebellion with his portrayal of a sneering motorcycle gang member,

who, when asked what he was rebelling against, asked “What ya got?”. The
