“It’s a truly wonderful hayfield.” Victoria pointed out for the second time, sounding even more cynical than she had the first. The moon had finally risen, and they could all see a little better.

Marion was ignoring her and focusing on the men and women, all kitted out as soldiers, who seemed to materialize out of the darkness. Some had arrived on another four-wheeler just after they had. Others had clearly been here waiting for them to arrive.

So far, Kyle hadn’t been bullshitting him. He’d counted twenty-five of them so far, all of them heavily armed, and it only made sense that there were more of them out there that he hadn’t seen.

Kyle leaned in close to him. “She’s going to keep that up, isn’t she?”

Marion grinned back at the soldier and shrugged. “Yes, but I’m about to start in myself.”

Kyle checked his watch and pointed out into the darkness of the field. “One minute.”

Something was definitely up. The soldiers all had pretty much stopped whatever they were doing and were checking their own watches as they all seemed to orient themselves towards the open field.

“No one lives out this way?” Kyle asked him conversationally.

Marion shook his head. “Couple of months ago I wouldn’t have been able to say for certain. The ISS has started forcing everyone into town in the last couple of months. I wouldn’t be surprised if there aren’t some folks ignoring it, but the Lemontier family have been gone since the beginning.”

“Good, going to be real loud here in a moment.”

He was about to ask why, but the soldier started shouting. “Thirty seconds! Ear plugs or fingers.” Kyle turned to the three of them. “Stick your fingers in your ears. There’s quite a concussive shockwave when our transport arrives.”

“You mean something large just materializes here?” Victoria asked, sounding doubtful.

Kyle looked straight at her and placed fingers in his own ears before glancing at him and Max to be certain they had followed suit. “Ma’am, that’s exactly what I’m saying. I’m being straight with you. Please cover your ears.”

Marion, with fingers stuck in his own ears, turned to Victoria. “Nobody is going to look more a fool than me. You can say ‘I told you so’ later.”

Everyone around them seemed to be on edge, and when one of the soldiers behind them yelled, “five seconds!” Marion saw a few of the soldiers turn their backs to the hayfield.

Five seconds came and went. He glanced at Kyle, who hadn’t moved.

“Still a hayfie—”

Victoria’s comment was cut off by her high-pitched shriek that was in turn drowned out by a bone-shaking boom. A moment later, they were all dipping their shoulders into an unseen wall of wind that washed over them and was gone just as quickly as it had appeared.

Marion’s mind had a what-the-hell moment as it framed the reality of the three-hundred-foot-long ship that had just appeared before them. He stood there numbly for a moment before looking over at Kyle, who had turned in Victoria’s direction. The scientist was just staring at the ship with her mouth hanging open and pieces of hay caught in her wool cap.
