The perceived effort–based method of determining lactate threshold heart rate is built into an 80/20 Running smartphone app that I developed with PEAR Sports. When you use it, you will be guided through the test with audio cues (you’ll actually hear my voice). The app also captures the lactate threshold automatically and uses it to calculate your five personal heart rate training zones. The workout itself is easy enough that you can repeat it the next day if you don’t trust your initial result. All of these features make the app-based version of the perceived effort method more reliable than the low-tech version.
