13 Essential Chords for Beginners

and How to Practice Them

There are dozens of chords that you can play on the guitar, and dozens of variations for each one of them. Add them all up, and you can spend your entire life learning to play all the possible chords on the guitar if you so desire.

However, most of us only need a much smaller number of chords in order to accomplish our goals for playing the guitar. I'm presenting here what I like to think of as the "13 Essential Chords" because if you learn these chords, you will be able to play a very wide variety of songs in most of the popular guitar keys.

And if you use a Capo along with these chords, you can expand the number of keys you can play in several fold and even find the best key for your voice if you're one of those people who like to sing along while you play!

The list of 13 Essential Chords contains both Major Chords and Minor Chords. They are often used together in the same songs however, so I'll present them in the order of what I consider to be their usefulness and their ease of mastery (leaving the harder ones for the end!).

I'm also including some of the chords we have worked on already in this book , just for the sake of completeness. If you've already worked on mastering one or more of these chords, then just skip it for now and go on to the next one!

Practice the steps provided for learning each chord, and when you think you're ready, see the following chapter on "7 Chord Progressions for Mastering the 13 Essential Chords". These chord progressions will really help you put these chords together in meaningful ways!. Don't forget to use the techniques for practicing that you learned from the 7 Keys!!!
