The man with the watch shook his head. “Be careful what you desire. You may not like what unfolds.”

“I don’t care,” Adrian said. “I know what I need to do. And exactly when. Seven hours should be more than enough time.”

The stranger clicked open his watch again. “Three minutes left. I can’t stop you, but think carefully. Is this really the path you wish to take?”

“I’m certain of it.”

The man regarded Adrian with little apparent empathy. “Just understand that the farther back you go, the greater the risk of temporal disorientation. It can play havoc with the mind and especially your memories. And given your current condition, you might not even remember a thing we talked about.”

“Sounds like you can’t guarantee your promise.”

The stranger shook his head. “It’s not my ability I’m worried about. It’s yours.”

“You’re saying I might get back and not remember anything?”

“And all would be for naught. A complete waste of time.”

“Well, can I bring something back with me?” Adrian said. “A note or something?”

“There’s no physicality in this transaction, Mr. Colfax. You can’t take anything with you. It’s only your ‘you’ that goes back.”

“My what? My ‘me’?”

“The incorporeal part of you that makes you you.”

“You mean my spirit.”

The stranger shrugged. “Spirit, mind, essence. Whatever you wish to call it. All you can take with you is who you are.”

“But you’re saying I might wake up and not remember who I am or what I’m supposed to do.”

“There’s a serious risk of that, yes. So I suggest you focus your mind on something during the migration. Something that will help you remember why you’re going back in the first place.”

“Like some kind of message?”

“Maybe. Nothing too long, however. Or too complex. The simpler the better for retention’s sake.”

“Well, like what?”

“Numbers tend to stimulate that part of your brain that can keep your mind engaged. Perhaps some kind of code or formula might help you.”

“Numbers . . . like a phone number?”

“Something simple but relevant.”

Adrian groaned in frustration. His chest ached. “I don’t know. I can’t think of anything.”

“And I can’t stress enough that time is of the essence here, Mr. Colfax. You have less than a minute.”

* * *

Adrian blinked and looked into a set of steel-blue eyes. Jonas Brunauer stared back at him. His thick gray mustache twitched to one side.

“You had another one of your visions?”

“Yeah,” Adrian said. “What did you do? How did you trigger it?”

Brunauer snorted. “We didn’t do anything. You just froze up.”

Adrian glanced from Brunauer to Scotty and back. “Well, I can remember more of it this time. How long was I out?”

Scotty checked his watch. “A few minutes. You were just sitting there, staring at him. You didn’t even blink.”

“What do you remember now?” Brunauer asked.

Adrian rubbed his forehead. “I think the whole thing has something to do with . . . What do they call it when your mind can . . . leave your body?”

“Astral projection?”

“Yeah, I think that’s what it is. He said that only my me could come back in time.
