Chapter 6 hardware and proCess settings
⢠depmod <option> â lists module dependencies
⢠insmod <module> â installs module
⢠modprobe <option> â loads modules with dependencies
⢠rmmod <module> â removes module
The lsmod command lists all loaded modules. To get more information about
one of those listed modules, use modinfo <module>. The depmod creates a file,
modules.dep, that lists all dependencies for this module. That file is located in the
/lib/modules/<kernel_version> directory.
You need to be careful when using the insmod command. It will install a module,
but it does not check for and install dependent modules. It is safer to use the modprobe command which does look for dependencies and install them. This utility is run at boot up so that all required modules are loaded. This utility looks for the necessary rules in the /etc/modprobe.conf we discussed previously.
Removing a module with rmmod is simple if you remember you cannot remove a
module that is loaded. Something else to remember is you should verify the module you want to remove is NOT a dependency of another module. If it is a dependency of another and you remove it, the other module will not function properly, and you will wonder why!
Hotplug and Coldplug Devices
There are two categories of devices you need to understand when working with
hardware â hotplug and coldplug. These are also known as hotswap and coldswap. If you try to add or remove something when the PC is running and you are not working with
a hotplug device, you could damage the piece of hardware you are installing and the
motherboard as well.
Hotplug
Hotplug devices are those that use the USB and Firewire ports. Some laptops still use what was called a PCMCIA card (PC card) and a PC-Express card. Those devices can be
added and removed while the PC is running without doing any damage. Server-class
machines, on the other hand, can have hotplug PCI cards, hard drives, and even RAM. If you have a USB flash drive or thumb drive, you are familiar with this technology. You just did not realize it was called a hotplug device. Printers are now coming with USB plugs.
