Stepping into the unknown

Assessing the reliability of the Shuttle was a hybrid between the traditional method of summing the observed reliability levels and taking a synergized prediction based on tests. There was only so far that engineers could go in taking historic data upon which to base their assessments of reliability and probability of failure. The Shuttle was the first of its kind and therefore without precedent from which to extract historic data, and one of a kind without parallel against which to compare it.

Another challenge was that the fundamental design requirement was reusability and that drove an engineering compromise in that the systems it employed had to be capable of repeated flights – the goal was up to 100 missions for each orbiter. That, too, had an effect on reliability and on fault predictions. Previously, components had been tested individually and then connected via what engineers call a ‘breadboard’, whereby equipment is electrically and sometimes mechanically connected but laid out on a two-dimensional jig for integrated testing. The issue is that equipment can sometimes give a different response when connected in series or parallel to that presented by a component or subsystem tested on its own.
