You connect the one end of the inductor to the positive lead of the 12 volt power supply, connect the other end of the inductor to a 1,000 ohm resistor, and connect the other end of the resistor to the negative side of the power supply. Connect the positive lead of your volt meter to the center point of the inductor and resistor, and the negative lead to the negative side of the power supply.
