The procedures on the upper lip result in the Cupid’s bow effect, which resembles a compressed letter M.

The facial alignment is now considered in relation to a vertical plane running down the bridge of the nose and through the mouth with adjustments as required.

Bear in mind that both the lips and the tip of the nose are at an equidistant to the surface of the stone at this stage of the carving and that the lips will be substantially recessed through hand shaping to merge with the eventual slope of the face.
