FUN FACTORY

Time packs my Play-Doh

back in the trunk of his Fun Factory.

The bright clench of our first

apartment: old grease & rose spritz.

The tight asterisk of His Rule

exerting its squeeze. As if love

were a matter of pure muscle:

Man vs. His Best Packing Skills.

I used to dream an invisible giant

had a fetish for my flesh,

would steal it off my sleeping body—

abscond with my skin

in a too-small suitcase.

Later in the lair,

he would unroll my skin

in front of a floor-length mirror—

hold it up to his form

like a mail-order teddy—his eyes

looking straight through my

eyeholes & back into a better

version of himself.

Then he climbed inside my skin.

Evicted everything that was Not Him.

My energy squeezed out the pale

lace & disbanded. That was the end

of my story. I saw it all happen.

The giant continued

to live in the drag of me. Nobody noticed.

Even when he told the truth about what he’d done.

Even when he wrote it down.
