Letâs talk tacit
Management consulting depends for much of its impact on catchy jargon. A newcomer to the vocabulary list is âtacit interactions.â Itâs McKinseyâs term for more complex job activities, ones that require âtacit knowledgeâ in the shape of analytic skills, judgment or problem-solving ability.
There are more and more people performing tacit interactions within companies. These are the most talented employees and the most highly paid. But how productive are they? McKinsey notes that efficiency/productivity improvement has all but completed its work in manufacturing and, subsequently, what it calls transaction-based sectors like retail and airlines.
The performance gap between the best and worst manufacturers has narrowed substantially, it says. Likewise the bestâworst gap in transaction-intensive industries. But when it comes to tacit-based businesses like publishing, healthcare and software, the gap remains wide, suggesting that more productivity improvements lie in store.
The usual improvement tools of standardization and automation wonât work with tacit workers, however. Technology must be used to support collaboration (such as video conferencing and instant messaging), the consultancy believes, and management must foster organizational change, learning and innovation. This could be the biggest opportunity of the modern era, it concludes. Is that the sound of lips being licked?
