14. Looking back

I could have done a lot more with my life, and as my son David often says, ‘Dad, you could have done anything you wanted to do, you always knew how to do it, no matter what I asked you to do’. It’s the old story, ‘My Dad can fix anything,’ but where I am missing something is in lack of ambition.

After I got home from Germany, all I wanted in life was enough to eat, a warm bed – preferably with someone in it, and, strangely enough, hot water. I had seen so little of it for four years. All of these things were easily obtainable without having to exert myself and, luckily, I went back to a job I loved and which became more and more interesting over the years, even after I retired and started consulting with a U.S.A. group.

Cars were my hobby, but not to change them into something different, just to keep them looking like new and running better than the garage mechanics could.

Neighbours used to think I was nuts doing all my own repairs. I used to say, ‘Only the dumbest guys in the class became garage mechanics, why would I let them near my car?’ The greatest thing in my life now is to repair something that the manufacturer has set up as not repairable, or doing puzzles, crossword or others like Microsoft’s free-cell – don’t you ever get hooked on this game.

Where do I stop? When I walk in the door at home or after I get married, or when I emigrated to Canada or should I write my own obituary now?
