Anticipate International Supply Chain Kinks

You need good analytical and financial skills to model service inventories.

If you are a global organization with an international installed base, you must plan your inventories accordingly. This is also true if you are procuring service parts internationally and managing international field service personnel. Handling international service is far more complicated because of time zones, international employment rules, cultural issues, and managing international inventories.

Your purchasing department may be executing purchase orders based on your plan and requirements. You should know if these parts are coming from international vendors. Where you will stock parts and manage stock levels from international vendors raises new issues with respect to inventory investment, quality, and management. You may need to take extra steps to assure your supply.

Some of the things your purchasing department should be doing prior to placing orders for spares with international vendors include the following:

Qualify vendors.

– Validate manufacturing capability (visit vendor site).

– Obtain test samples.

– Check references.

– Determine if vendor has schedule capacity to take on more work.

– Validate international shipment experience and processes.

– Identify response and planning horizons.

– Confirm communications capabilities.
