Typically I will start from a primitive, such as a horizontal Cylinder, but with the goal of quickly building away from its extremely regular shape. To get underway, I selected the polygons at one end, as well as some strips of polygons down the sides. Then I deleted them and applied a Shell modifier to give the thin surface some thickness. I added a Spherify modifier to that with an Amount of 25 or so to give the straight edges some curvature.
