Bhagyimani’s Sketches

‘B hagyimani dear, your mother will be here tomorrow,’ saying this, Uncle went out on his cycle. Grandmother had not yet got back from her job. Aunt, taking her brother along, had gone to the street corner to fetch water. Bhagyi was sitting underneath the cot drawing pictures with colourful pencils. She almost succeeded in applying a thick dark black colour to the clouds, moistening the pencil with her tongue. She came out from underneath the cot as soon as the sound of Uncle’s cycle arriving in the street corner melted into the air, then took a twirl in the room holding the two ends of her garment, as if in a dance, but where was the space in the room for that?

The huge cot occupied all corners of the room; at one end, there was a stove for cooking pots, pans, and utensils, and the other had all kinds of clothes hanging from a rope that was tied to a wall in the room. Even so, Bhagyi danced a little while—after all, Mother was coming!

It would have been good if she had had the chance to take

a look at herself in the mirror. But Aunt must put the mirror

away on the top shelf, where Bhagyi wouldn’t be able to reach.

She would have to ask her aunt to bring out the pink frock. It would be better if she did it today; in all the hurry, she may not have the time for it tomorrow.

And yes, how did Mother know that Bhagyi’s results were out? Had the report card come? When Bhagyi was coming home yesterday, hugging the card to her chest, she had actually stopped for a while, had also looked for her mother all over the place. Perhaps because others’ mothers had come. Had she seen her, she would have clasped her mother inside both her arms and insisted on having an orange coloured ice-cream.

Bhagyi had been promoted to the next class, had come first

in drawing.

Getting home, Bhagyi saw that her aunt and her brother were sleeping away on the cot like they did at that time and that her meal had been kept covered in one corner. Then there were some lentils and goodness gracious me—a whole boiled egg! Eating the egg, which got almost stuck inside her throat, she felt so happy. Does good time arrive, when it does, all around?
