What Andy highlights so well is the potential for 3D printing to facilitate widespread personal fabrication. Since the Industrial Revolution, the vast majority of our possessions have been produced in a remote factory using machinery too complex and too costly for most individuals to operate and own. But with the arrival of personal 3D printers, no longer will this have to remain the case. As Andy further commented ‘knowing that I don’t need to learn a trade to print a complex shape is very exciting’. And it is this excitement and opportunity that this chapter is fundamentally about.
