The point is that one often begins a modeling process with regularly shaped Maya solids. These solids are manipulated to create new shapes. Because the initial uv grid is engineered around the original location of vertices in the object, the process of manipulating an object can cause the uv grid to become very irregular. If the model isn’t very organic, and in particular, if the model has large, flat sides to it, such as those in an indoor or outdoor architectural model, the Automatic and Planar tools on the UV menu can often transform a messy surface into one with a nice, regular uv grid that allows a material to go on smoothly.
