CHAPTER TEN

I float over the West Hall, lit up like a torch and certain that I’m being filmed. The problem is, I have no idea where Negatia’s gotten to. A black suit had come in, telling her that the supers were heading towards Hisato Nao’s house, and she’d raced off, enraged. Riddle had left, but I doubt he went to Hisato’s, because he’s got Addie—there’s no way he’s going to take her into a situation like that—

“Heeeeeyyyy,” Skye says, over the commlink. “We’re going to need a psychic type! Max, you still in this Hall?”

“Not at the moment, but I can come back,” Max says. “Where are you?”

“I’m onnnn… okay, I’ll just send the coordinates, okay?” A map appears over my comm, and probably over every comm linked on this channel, and I don’t even hesitate to tap the glowing mark. I teleport, appearing floating over Vixen’s house, where Skye is holding Kinetic captive as Vixen and Yester block them from the house. I’m positive they’ve told Lorelei to hide somewhere.

“Did you really have to bring him HERE?” I ask, groaning loudly before dropping to the ground. Max appears a second later, and Yester goes invisible, as the world goes dark.

“Max! Fix this guy! Someone’s messed with him!” Skye says, completely ignoring the threat from Yester.

“LET ME GO! He’s going to attack!” Kinetic growls, trying desperately to pull free of Skye’s hold.

“You come to our home,” Yester’s voice comes from all around, “and you dare to—“

Max ignores the drama completely as he heads to Kinetic, reaching up and touching his forehead. “Did Massteria get his powers back?” he asks, abruptly.

“Mmmm, nope, don’t think so!” Skye says.

I tap on my comm, checking to see if there were any Cape Cell breakouts. The screen floating over my watch jerks and pixilates, and I pick up on the heat signal heading straight for Max. “Wait, don’t,” I say, rushing forward and blocking Yester before he attacks. “He’s just fixing him.”

“He’s a super villain—“ Yester starts out.

“He’s Mastermental’s son, Yester,” Vixen says, and Yester appears again, looking startled. “You’ve been around long enough to realize he’s been coming once a week!”

“Where’s he been coming?” Yester demands.

“He’s training to be a Hall leader, you old coot,” she says. “He’s not the problem, this upstart is—and YOU, who brought him straight to my beach!” she says, her face shifting into something eerie and sharp, with fangs. Her hands turn webbed, with sharp, needle-like claws instead of fingernails. Her skin takes on a blue hue.

“HE thinks that Yester attacked one of their kids,” Skye says.

“What?” Yester asks, looking stunned.

“Someone took advantage of their little mad-fest and boosted it until they were going kookie-dookie, and then he boosted the kid’s powers that he shouldn’t have,” Skye says.

“Why would I go after a kid?” Yester asks, still looking confused. “I’m a DAD!”

“You haven’t earned that title yet, mister,” Vixen says.

“Buuuutttt…” Skye says, “this is smelling more and more like a diversion than an actual attack?” she offers. “Where’s Nico?”

Max and I look at each other, and then we both look at Skye.
