1. In the introduction, Rory Loughnane describes the problems posed for
philosophers and critics trying to define what is ânormalâ in the early
modern period, as well as the additional challenge involved for modern
thinkers given their temporal distance from the period. Throughout this
essay, concerned principally with how Shakespeare exploits the audienceâs
awareness of and reliance on stage conventions to create theatrical inter-
est, I use the word ânormalâ with reference to aspects of theater and the-
atricality whose simplicity and familiarity (in Wittgensteinâs terms) help to
conceal their potential impact on the play and the spectators.
