1. In the introduction, Rory Loughnane describes the problems posed for

philosophers and critics trying to define what is ‘normal’ in the early

modern period, as well as the additional challenge involved for modern

thinkers given their temporal distance from the period. Throughout this

essay, concerned principally with how Shakespeare exploits the audience’s

awareness of and reliance on stage conventions to create theatrical inter-

est, I use the word ‘normal’ with reference to aspects of theater and the-

atricality whose simplicity and familiarity (in Wittgenstein’s terms) help to

conceal their potential impact on the play and the spectators.
