EPILOGUE

“Are you ready for this, sweetheart?”

Cerys bit down on her bottom lip and nodded.

Eli didn’t have to feel her emotions or read her mind to know what she was thinking. She wanted to claim him in the way of her people, but they still hadn’t found another Tarin to ask who knew how to do it safely.

“Hey, we’re going to figure it out, okay?” Cupping her face in both hands, he pulled her close and brushed a chaste kiss over her brow. “I love you.”

“I love you, too.”

In the weeks since they’d arrived on Xenthian, it felt like everything had changed. Cerys still had her moments when she retreated into herself, but those times came few and far between. She laughed more, and she carried herself with more confidence. The castle’s rear garden was her favorite place to be, and more than once, Eli had found her sitting by the pond and staring into its crystalline waters with a contented smile.

The Xenon had been gracious and welcoming, and they were all curious about the first Tarin female to call their planet home. Cerys didn’t mind the attention, and she did her best to answer their questions. When she didn’t know an answer, or couldn’t find the right words, Eli was right there to help, leading Ivy to suggest he take over one of the sanctuaries once they were completed.

Structures were currently being built on each of the four outlying islands of Xenthian to house visitors and refugees. Each building stretched twelve stories high, and every level boasted six lavish suites with every amenity imaginable, including magical wards to keep its residents protected from anyone who meant them harm.

On the lowest level, visitors would find a thriving market that offered everything from fresh produce to an assortment of apparel. Ivy had felt it was a necessary addition considering many of those seeking sanctuary arrived with nothing more than the clothes on their back. Eli couldn’t have agreed more.

The first morning after their arrival, he’d contacted Olivia to let her know he wouldn’t be returning to X21. She hadn’t appeared surprised by the news, but then again, they’d both known when he’d left that the chances of him coming back were minimal. She’d bitched for a few minutes about having to find a replacement, but in the end, she’d simply wished him the best and made him promise to visit.

“Are you two ready to proceed?” Tira asked, interrupting Eli’s thoughts. “Everyone is waiting for you inside the great hall.

“Well, they can just keep waiting,” Eli responded, winking at Cerys and making her giggle. “It’s our mating ceremony, not theirs.”

The Xenon neither knew nor cared about Unity Day, but as it turned out, they loved any excuse to throw a party. In this case, they’d decided an official ceremony to honor his and Cerys’ mating was a more valid reason to celebrate than an intergalactic holiday.

“Okay, okay,” he conceded when the captain glared at him. “We’re coming.”

Taking Cerys’ hand, he led her through the massive wooden doors and into the biggest ballroom he’d ever seen.
