The widespread and unrestrained use of X-rays led to serious injuries, with people who were X-rayed or who worked with the original machines suffering radiation burns, hair loss and organ damage. Early dosages were up to 1,500 times higher than those used today. It was eventually recognized that frequent exposure to X-rays could be harmful; today special measures are taken to protect the patient and doctor. High doses of X-rays are used to treat cancer.
