Chapter 12

Angela listened. Her mind and heart quickening as Tom told of his meeting with Meg. Goddess, bless him! He'd ignored his deep-seated prejudices and met with a witch because he wanted to help her.

She couldn't help smiling as she hugged him. "How marvelous of Meg. I'd love to share a Full Moon ceremony with her. Try as I have, I can't remember all the rituals, but with her to guide me." The waves of skepticism from Tom's direction were so strong, she could almost taste them. He looked quite capable of obstructing things. She took a slow, centering breath. "Will you come with me the day after tomorrow?"

His expression suggested he'd be impossible to stop. "If you insist on going."

Darn him! Bring wonderful news and grouch over it. Men! "I do, Tom. Since you don't understand, just please accept it means a lot to me."

"More than us?"

The question came like a dousing of icy water. How dare he try to make her choose between discovery of herself and him! And how dare he wind her up like this! She deliberately deepened her scowl before smiling sweetly and kissing him on the cheek. She was tempted to slug him around the jaw. "Tom." She gave an exaggerated sigh, well aware he couldn't echo that. "How can I answer that, when we still haven't worked out what exactly is between us?"

"You know what's between us. You're just denying it."

Brother, was he spoiling for a fight? Too bad she was determined to eschew negative energy in preparation for the Full Moon ritual. "As you're denying what I am?" So much for eschewing negative energy! She was generating it.

Tom's shoulders sagged. He looked the closest she'd ever seen a vampire come to weary. "Maybe you're right. Accepting you as a witch means discarding centuries of belief."

"Centuries of superstition and fear!" She crossed over to where he paced in front of the empty fireplace. He'd brushed the dried eucalyptus arrangement in the hearth, and she caught the scent as she reached out for him. "My first encounter with a vampire was so horrific even the traces left of that memory have me shuddering. If I can accept you, Justin, Stella, Dixie, and Kit, and the rest of the colony, as different from that vampire, can't you see me as more than a medieval superstition?"

For several hideous, gut-twisting seconds, she feared he'd say no.

"Will 'I'll try my best' be good enough?"

The plea in his voice was impossible to refuse. "How about, 'try until you twist yourself in knots for me'?"

His laugh came from deep in his belly, rich and sexy. Pretty much like him. "Angela, I'm already twisted up in knots over you. You hadn't noticed?"

She glanced down. "That's not all I'm noticing."

He grabbed her waist and pulled her close. Mmm, she'd been right. She pressed her hips into him. "Woman," he growled, "don't you think of anything but sex?"

"It's a bit difficult when you're holding me this close."

"Good!" Her lowered his lips to hers and kissed.
