Chapter 37
Earlier in the day, Alec asked Dom if he would be interested in visiting the storage bay where Grayson had discovered Helenaâs body. He was initially taken aback by the idea, but as the day progressed, morbid curiosity crept in, and Dom couldnât let the idea go. Now, standing in front of the casings, Dom felt an uneasy sensation run through him.
âWhy would someone put Helenaâs body in one of these?â asked Alec, staring down at the empty power cell casing.
âIâm still at a loss for why anyone would kill her,â replied Dom, scratching the back of his head.
Alec shrugged his shoulders. âDad says thousands murder people every day back on the Earth.â
Dom couldnât even begin to follow his brotherâs logic. âThe Earth is a mess. The Arc has always been a safe place. You canât compare the two.â
âWell, there is one major variable that exists on both, though,â Alec reasoned.
âWhatâs that?â
âPeople.â
âWhat does that mean?â asked Dom.
âPeople can be unpredictable,â explained Alec. âLike I said the other day, maybe caging up a hundred-plus people on a single ship for decades is starting to take its toll, and someone finally snapped. This is why the sooner we get to Uelara, the better. You know that sometimes even I get to a point where I feel like Iâm going to lose it on this damn mission.â
âI donât know . . . sounds a bit extreme if you ask me.â
âAnd yet, here we are, with one of our friends having been found murdered,â replied Alec.
Dom still couldnât accept that anyone on the ship could be so cold as to kill another crew member. But Alec had a point. Whether Dom could understand it or not, Helena had been found murdered in the very spot he now stood.
Although he agreed with Alec, he was sensing a troubling change within his brother. Alecâs reactions to Helenaâs death seemed to be transforming somehow from despair into something less tragic and more impersonal. His prior sentiments of concern and compassion were now being replaced with statements of wonder and curiosity. Even Alecâs facial expressions appeared different. His once warm eyes were now rather emotionless.
Alec sat on the edge of one of the casings and looked up at Dom. âI know you and Lance are friends, but . . .â Alec looked at the floor and paused. âAll signs point to Lance.â
With this theory, Dom became agitated. Alec wasnât the first to suggest Lanceâs involvement. âI know everyone thinks that, but the Lance I know would never kill anyone.â
âYou sure about that? Have you seen Grayson? And do you remember how hard he pushed Sam in the galley?â
âThatâs different, and you know it,â argued Dom. âHell, you and I have had some knockdown, drag-out fights in the past. Does that mean one of us could kill someone?â
âThatâs completely different. How can you compareâ?â
âHey, guys! Iâve been looking all over for you.â
Dom turned to see Echo standing just outside the storage bay. âWhatâs going on, Echo?â
Echo glanced over to the casings and then quickly averted his eyes and stared at the floor.
