Chapter Thirteen

FRANK

5:49 AM, Monday

A cold dawn in the outskirts of Washington, D.C., USA. Air fresh and light, yet thick.

Jesus, I’m losing it. I’m losing it big time.

Luka paged one of his contacts; he got us a place. It's a safe house surrounded by endless cornfields. We cleared up about five hundred meters of area around the house and built up a wooden fence.

Fill made some traps. Luka and him put those, and trip wires, all around the place. He also made up some cameras and motion detectors from some scraps we had in the house, and we put those around too. Just to be safe.

We use the cleared-up area to train. Fill has a small patch occupied for his ‘big inventions,’ but he hasn't used it yet.

Inside is a pretty basic structure. Walking in from the front door is a hall. A huge long hall. On both sides of which are our rooms. On the left are Fill, Gabe, and Chase. And on the right are Amara, me, Luka and El. The hall ends as another hall begins, the entry to which is in front of El’s room. It is our armory.

It was stocked with food and disassembled weapons when we got here. There were cabinets and sealed boxes of weapon parts all around. El got to work with the weapons, and the rest of us moved the food to the kitchen.

All the way in the back of the armory, we cleaned up a small area which is Gabe’s lab. There are two microscopes there. I honestly don’t know how the two are different, but he was very specific about which ones he needed. There are a lot of other types of equipment, devices, and machinery too. I don’t know what any of it is, but Gabe asked for it, so he got it. It’s a lot so we gave him a cabinet. El emptied it out, somehow.

Amara’s room is the first one on the right. Beside it is the kitchen. If you look at it from above, the kitchen breaks the rectangular symmetry of the house. It is kind of outside, but still a part of the house.

In front of the kitchen door, in the hall, is a large round table with eight chairs; two of which are never used by us.

We have a van parked in front of the door with some essentials inside it. We are all paranoid. Can you blame us? We had to ditch my truck, got the van instead.

The contact also got us new burner phones, just in case. Luka and Amara got laptops too.

I'm currently in my room. It's a pretty straightforward setup. There's a bed in the center, opposite the door. A desk is to the left of the door, and the bathroom and closet are to the right. And a decent sized window right above the headrest.

It's dark right now; early dawn. It's fucking gloomy and a mess, like my goddamn mind. Laying on my bed, I am staring at the ceiling.
