Genesee Valley and Gorge

Distance: 57 miles, easy to strenuous cycling

Terrain: Varied-flat stretches, gradual and steep hills

County Map: Livingston

One of the first Europeans to see the Genesee Valley described it as “the most beautiful flats I ever saw, being not less than 4 miles in width, and extending from right to left as far as can be seen.”

This tour passes through that valley and along the 17-mile length of the spectacular Genesee River Gorge in Letchworth State Park. Strong cyclists can do the ride in a day, though the first third of the ride is deceptively easy compared with the rest. Pushing to finish in a day would be a mistake for leisurely cyclists; there is enough to see to repay fully spending two or more days on the route.

Overnight accommodations are available just short of the halfway point, at Genesee Falls Inn (now a B&B). As there are no other places in Portageville, reservations are suggested. Overnight facilities in Letchworth State Park include tent and trailer campsites, log cabins, and inn accommodations. During the summer Letchworth is very popular, and reservations are essential. Campsites and cabins can be reserved by calling 1-800-456-CAMP or visit parks.ny.gov (click on camp, select campsites, select camping reservations). You can also check Reserve America at www.reserveamerica.com. To stay at Glen Iris Inn or any of four other on-site facilities, you can call 585-493-2622. Rates begin a bit over $100 and go up, depending on the accommodations you desire. You can visit www.glenirisinn.com for more details.
