Spirals, spirals, and more spirals. Everywhere I looked there were spirals everywhere in varying sizes. Hell, I think even the cobweb in the corner was a fucking spiral. The amount of them was nearly overwhelming, and the swirling shapes made me feel dizzy.

“What is this place?” Jared asked, but I could tell by the tone of his voice he wasn’t asking me directly for a response. He was just thinking out loud.

I kept my mouth shut as I shined the light around the small room. It was about the size of a large closet, and the walls looked to be cemented over—the door being the exception. The spirals were carved into the cement, and the flooring was the same hardwood as the rest of the house.

That was it. Nothing else. No furniture. Nothing to indicate what the room was for or why it was hidden in the locked attic. While I was on the verge of feeling disappointed over how anti-climactic the room was, instinct told me we hadn’t discovered all its secrets just yet.

“Stay close,” I directed to Jared as I walked to the farthest end of the room—which was really only a few more steps.

But after having measured nearly every damn inch of that house except for the attic, I went over the calculations in my head. Even taking into account the rounded walls and this room, there was still some more space left. So that could only mean one thing.

“What are you doing?” Jared asked me.

“I’m trying to see if I’m right,” I told him.

“Right about what?”

I sighed and shined my light on the wall. I started from the ceiling and ran it all the way down, looking for any visible seams.

“After measuring and drawing this place, I should know every fucking square inch of it. Something isn’t adding up with some of the measurements; just as I suspected. So if I’m right…” I trailed off as I handed him the flashlight. “Hold it steady,” I instructed as I ran my fingers along the crack in the wall until I could fit one in a groove and pull.

I heard the shuffle of feet as Jared took a step back so I could swing the hidden door open even wider.

“That this house holds more secrets than we gave it credit for,” I explained as we both looked at what the beam was illuminating.

“Are we flipping a coin to see who goes down the creepy staircase first?” Jared asked with a shaky voice.

I opened my mouth to respond when a strong wind blew through the room, slamming the other door shut in its wake. I jumped into action, rushing toward the door while Jared’s startled scream echoed off the enclosed walls.

“Don’t panic. I’ll get us out of this,” I reassured him as I reached out my hands to push of the door.

But it wouldn’t budge. No matter how hard I pushed, pulled, and even attempted to kick the door in, nothing worked. I could feel Jared’s fright increase with each passing minute.
