Some people are in the habit of talking endlessly about their own woes. Initially most of us will listen sympathetically to these people. If they have had a hard life, we are usually prepared to listen for quite a while and even to listen repeatedly to the same tales, trying to make constructive suggestions about how they could change things for the better. Sooner or later, however, the time comes when we become exasperated with moaners.

The tell-tale sign that you are dealing with habitual moaners is that these people never take the least interest in your helpful suggestions; it is as if you have not spoken. They just seem to need someone to dump their emotional rubbish on, without ever considering doing something about their problem. Some moaners will be quite ready to appear on your doorstep or at the end of your phone line at any time of night or day, and if you dare complain about this they can even make you feel guilty by saying something like, ‘Well, you’re just like everyone else, you don’t care!’ And of course you do not want to be uncaring like all the others, so you continue to listen yet again.
