The Guardians stood in silence, stunned by the record they had just seen. Only the rippling of their crests, flickering with colors as they sought to control their emotions, signaled their inner turmoil; and their predominant emotion was fear.

Finally, Second of the Red spoke. “What are we to do, First Guardian?”

The First had seen the record before the meeting, and her emotions were controlled, her crest the pale blue of calm, collected thought. “Nothing.”

“But First Guardian—”

“I have discussed this with the Yellow. Perhaps you should hear their advice.”

The new Second of the Yellow had also seen the record in advance, when the First had told her of her predecessor’s demise at the hands of the humans. Her crest was also calm and blue as she accepted the invitation to speak. “We have analyzed what you have seen, Guardians, and this is our conclusion. The humans detected the Triforce immediately—by what means, we do not know—but we believe they were aware of every action our ships took. At some point, they deliberately revealed the ship that was shadowing, though they could have remained hidden. They showed us no fear, and they evaded our attempts to pursue them with contemptuous ease.

“They watched until they knew we were headed for their planet. Then they intercepted the Triforce in a manner that was tactically brilliant and flawlessly executed. They challenged us—dared even to tell us they were about to attack—and when the Triforce tried to engage them, they simply moved out of range.

“Once they lured our forces to the point of no retreat, they attacked using guided fusion bombs that came at our ships so quickly and in such numbers, the entire Triforce was destroyed in a matter of moments. Only one ship escaped destruction—the Guardian’s ship—and they hunted it down and slowly tore it to pieces.

“The facts are these: The renegade humans possess warships far superior to ours. They can accelerate more than twice as fast as our ships, and their guided weapons are ten times faster than that. Against these weapons, we have no defense, and their range is such that our weapons cannot engage the attacking ships. Their smallest warships are a match for our largest and best. Their detection and surveillance systems can detect our ships at great distances, but we cannot see them until they choose to reveal themselves.

“We believe they possess these warships in vast numbers. The Triforce was attacked by nearly two twelves of warships, and they may have many more waiting in reserve or guarding their planet. They spent many more weapons than needed to destroy the Triforce. These factors speak of a fleet with warships and weapons to spare.

“Given their superior detection capabilities, we believe they knew of the messenger ship the Triforce left behind and allowed it to escape as a warning to us. They must have destroyed the Blue Envoy and the Monoforce and waited for our response. When the Triforce arrived, they decided to make it clear we trespass at our peril.
