Robbie Williams — Life Thru a Lens
29 September
In July 95, 21-year-old Robbie Williams left Take That and decided to start a solo career. At this time, Britpop was rapidly gaining popularity and Robbie desperately wanted to be part of it. Williams at that time already knew the Gallagher brothers personally, hanging out with them during the Oasis performance in Glastonbury, playing football and etc. The friendship lasted until one day Noel Gallagher was tired of it all and he called Williams a "fat dancer from Take That". Robbie Williams remembered that and started writing his debut album.
Initially, narcissist Williams was planning to call his debut album "The Show-Off Must Go On". He ended up calling it "Life Thru a Lens".
Robbie Williams' first solo single "Old Before I Die" was released in April '97 and co-written with Desmond Child ("Livin' on a Prayer" by Bon Jovi) and Eric Bazilian ("One Of Us" by Joan Osborne). It's the only song on Life thru a Lens that has songwriters of this level. Most of the songs on the album were co-written with Guy Chambers. "Old Before I Die", obviously written under the influence of Oasis, peaked at number two in the English charts. The next two singles "Lazy Days" and "South of the Border" had a medium success until the fourth single "Angels" was released on December 1st...
Williams and Chambers wrote "Angels" in less than half an hour. Williams said he dedicated the song to his dead uncle and aunt. Subsequently, Irish singer and songwriter Ray Heffernan would claim that he wrote the original version of "Angels", which was called "An Angel Instead". According to Heffernan, he wrote the song in Paris in '96 and dedicated it to his child, whom he and his girlfriend had lost due to a miscarriage. Heffernan and Williams later met in a Dublin pub. Heffernan showed Williams a sketch of "An Angel Instead", after which they recorded a demo version of the song together. Williams confirmed that he recorded the "Angels" demo with Heffernan, but said that he later significantly rewrote the song with Chambers. When Heffernan found out that "Angels" would be on the album, he asked for compensation. Williams' management paid Heffernan £7,500. Heffernan was naive enough to agree. "Angels" brought Williams £7,000,000. "Angels" was Williams' best-selling single, but contrary to popular belief, it never made it to the top of the charts, only to the fourth. The success of "Angels" boosted the sales of Life Thru a Lens .
The album itself was released at the end of September, consisting of twelve songs and remembered for three: "Angels", "Let Me Entertain You" and "Old Before I Die". The genre of Life Thru a Lens can be described as "Britpop-inspired pop".
Six years after the release of Life Thru a Lens , the "fat dancer from Take That" gave three sold-out concerts at Knebworth for 375,000 people.
