The woman's breath came in fast, steady gasps. "Oh, God, oh ... yes ... yes ..."

She quieted suddenly, lying back against the sweat-soaked sheet.

The man on top of Josefa Pescadora lay forward, burying his face into the pillow next to her head. "I love you," he mumbled. "God help me, Maria, I love you."

"Yes," Josefa said, "and I love you, Alan."

The man called Alan rolled off her and onto his back. He slipped an arm under her neck and around her shoulders, staring wide-eyed at the ceiling, then crossed his other wrist over his eyes.

Josefa closed her own eyes as her head bounced lightly against Alan's arm. Oh, God, she thought. The tic. That abominable nervous tic. It might disappear when they were having sex, but it came right back like a faithful puppy dog as soon as they'd finished.

Alan breathed deeply, his air shooting down to make the hair on his chest flutter. "It's just ... My God, Maria, I've never known anyone who could make me feel so..." He rolled to face her on his side, slipped his arm out from beneath her and propped his head up. "And it's good for you every time, isn't it? I mean, you're not just faking it?"

Josefa felt her lips fall into the well-practiced pout. She saw Alan tic twice and turned her face away. Reaching down between his legs, she pinched him. "Of course not," she purred. "You are a naughty boy to even suggest such a thing."

A broad grin covered Alan's face as he fell to his back. Then the grin faded and he dosed his eyes. "We have to do something," he said. "I want you. All the time I want you. Will you marry me?" He opened his eyes and looked up pleadingly.

"I have promised you, haven't I? Is my word no good?"

"Of course it is. I'm sorry."

For several moments they lay there, lost in their thoughts. Then Josefa said, "What are you thinking?"

The man didn't answer at first. Finally he said, "Steve."

Josefa nodded, knowing he would feel the movement against his arm "Yes. I think of him frequently myself."

The man rose to his arm once more, staring at her. "I miss him. He was a good friend."

"And if it wasn't for him, I'd have never met you."

"That is true. He was a good friend to us both. Perhaps even more to me than to you. I'm sorry he's dead. But we must go on."

"I don't know how I'd have gotten through his death if it wasn't for you. My God, shot down in the street like a dog." He rose to a sitting position. Leaning over the side of the bed, he lifted his shirt from the floor, then dropped it again. "What we talked about," he said softly. "Your plan."

"Yes?"

"I don't know if I can go through with it."

Josefa leaned forward, hugging him around the waist and pressing her cheek into his chest. "Not even for me?"

Alan didn't answer.

"Think about it, my love," Josefa went on.
