CHAPTER 26

A SEDAN LABELED Department of Homeland Security Police approaches the prototypes and rolls to a stop in front of the all-concrete designs from Caddell Construction. An officer gets out of the car and puts on a bulletproof vest. He takes several steps toward the Caddell then turns back toward the car, and, as he does, a cell phone emerges from the passenger-side window, held by another officer who is, apparently, willing to snap the shot but unwilling to get out of the car to do so. The officer in the bulletproof vest gives a thumbs-up and rugged smile for a count of three then drops both, takes off the vest, and gets back in the car. A moment later they continue down the line, coasting the Roosevelt Reservation in the direction of the Pacific Ocean.
