THE LEFTIST WAR ON HUMANS

Today, this history has been turned upside down. The militant Left places more importance on the rights of trees and animals over people. At the heart of this belief system is a revulsion for humanity on the part of the radical Left. Think this is an exaggeration? Some of the most prominent members of the environmental movements have said essentially the same thing.

Ingrid Newkirk, the founder of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), for instance, said that “Humans have grown like a cancer. We’re the biggest blight on the face of the earth.”12

According to Newkirk, humans do not have an inherent right to life. “I don’t believe human beings have the ‘right to life,’” she once said. “That’s a supremacist perversion. A rat is a pig is a dog is a boy.”13

Newkirk has gone so far as to issue a public will for her body to be donated to PETA upon her death with the direction that her body be used “in a manner that draws attention to needless animal suffering and exploitation.”14 While she leaves the particulars up to PETA, she recommends “that the ‘meat’ of my body, or a portion thereof, be used for a human barbecue, to remind the world that the meat of a corpse is all flesh, regardless of whether it comes from a human being or another animal and that flesh foods are not needed.”15

Another recommendation is that her skin be peeled off and made into purses “to remind the world that human skin and the skin of other animals is the same and that neither is ‘fabric.’” She suggests that her feet be removed and turned into an umbrella stand, you know, like the ones made out of elephant feet. No, thanks. She wants her liver “vacuum-packed and shipped” to France for foie gras. Anyway, you get the idea. The woman is nuts, but her movement and her cause are quite serious.

Philosopher John Hardwig argues that humanity is a drain on our natural resources and that humans get to a certain age where they have a “duty to die.” He contends “there may be a fairly common responsibility to end one’s life in the absence of any terminal illness … a duty to die when one would prefer to live.… To have reached the age of, say 75 or 80 years without being ready to die is itself a moral failing, the sign of a life out of touch with life’s basic realities … A duty to die is more likely when you have already lived a rich and full life. You have already had a full share of the good things life offers.”16

Some have even gone so far as to cheer terrible diseases like AIDS to cull the herd of humanity. “I know social scientists who remind me that people are part of nature, but it isn’t true,” claimed David Graber, a research biologist at the National Park Service (in other words, a government employee whose salary is paid by you, the taxpayer).
