Chapter 9
Frank quickly slammed his door. While Danny stood frozen behind the front door, staring at the driver of the truck, Frank tackled him under his arms and pushed him into the front seat, saving both of them.
Danny screeched in pain as his head hit the steering wheel. Frank gave one more shove to get Danny’s legs out of the way just before the truck hit the front door and snapped it off like a dead twig.
Frank backed off Danny and crawled out onto the street. A crowd was gathering around the car, and one of them, a young Chinese man, grabbed Frank by the arm. “I got the hcense plate number,” he said. “Do you have some paper?”
Frank looked at the man, and then over at Olgar, who was opening the right front door to tend to Danny. Danny had stopped screaming but looked as though he had passed out. Joe was standing behind Olgar, looking perplexed, and Zack Mieli was running out into the street toward Frank.
“Paper?” Frank asked, still a httle dazed.
“Yes. I don’t want to forget the number,” said the man. “I have a pen.”
“Here,” Zack said, taking a piece of folded paper out of his shirt pocket. He was apparently not about to grab Frank in pubhc, so Frank didn’t try to run. Neither did Joe. In fact, Olgar was asking Joe to help him pull Danny out of the car.
“That was a pretty good move,” Zack said. “You saved Danny’s life. He was just going to stand there staring at the driver, like an idiot.”
As soon as Joe and Olgar got Danny to his feet and out in the fresh air, he revived. “What’d that kid do? I could have had that guy. Nobody does that to me—or my car—and gets away with it.”
“It’s okay, Danny,” Zack said. He was walking toward the sidewalk and pulling Frank with him. He had grabbed Frank, but in a gesture of affection. “We’ve got the Hcense plate number. We can get that slime.”
“Look,” Frank said to Danny, still unsure why he wasn’t running for it, “I hate to dampen your enthusiasm, but I think that guy was trying to get me.”
“Doesn’t matter,” Danny said, adjusting his neck brace with a pained look. “He wrecked my beautiful new car.”
“Don’t worry about the car, Danny,” Zack said, squeezing Frank tighter with his thick, hairy arm. “We can get that fixed. Think about it. Frank here saved your stupid life.”
Danny walked over to look at the driver’s side of his car. He stopped and stared at the car, pointing his finger first to the back door, then the front, then back again, as though he was trying to figure something out. Finally he looked up. “Hey, this kid Frank saved my life. He actually saved my fife. I mean, he wasn’t just shoving me out of the way to save his life. He could have jumped up on the hood or something.”
“That’s what I’ve been trying to tell you,” Zack said.
