Matan and Alexndra

Alex arrived at the party’s parking lot at around the same time—sunrise. She was just in time to surprise her DJ boyfriend before he started his next set.

“Matan, my friend Shani Hadar is at the party entrance, she has a surprise for you, meet her in the parking lot,” she texted him, still not saying that she herself was the surprise.

“I’m on my way,” he replied.

The first rockets were fired before Matan reached her.

At 6:22, the sky lit up with what many of the non-Israelis at first thought were some new kind of Israeli fireworks. The production staff, under no such illusions, stopped the music immediately and the crowd responded with boos. Even some of the locals were momentarily confused. As far as they knew, the Gaza border area had been quiet for months, the army had approved the party location, and dozens of police officers were guarding the party area.

“Everybody spread out … protect yourself … code red!” the organizers announced, instructing everyone to “lie on the ground, put your hands on your head.”

Three minutes later, by 6:25, the police made the call to end the party: “Everyone start making your way to the exits.”

Alex didn’t care about any sirens or Home Front Command instructions; she just wanted to find Matan. She left the car and began looking for a bearded man dressed in black.

He found her first. They hugged, but Matan told her to leave immediately—to leave alone.

“The party’s over; there’s nothing to do here. Get back in the car and get out of here. I don’t want to be worrying about you.”

“I can’t believe I just drove three hours and the moment I showed up the party’s over.”

Nearby, a few young women were having panic attacks. Matan gave them water and helped calm them down. “Missiles are no joke. Get going before the traffic gets horrible.”

“Come with us,” Alex begged him.

He refused.

He said he felt responsible for helping to evacuate everyone first.
