Home Invasion
Many variables should be covered for protecting your residence. For instance, having a plan if a fire occurs or simply being prepared for a natural disaster. Depending on what area of the world you live in, these disasters include earthquakes, floods, hurricanes, tornados, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis, and cyclones. Some people are prepared in the event one of these acts of nature occurs, but most are not. Worst yet, most people arenât prepared for the most minor of disruptions to their daily lives.
One of the most frightening and potentially dangerous crimes that occurs to families today is a home invasion robbery. This is when a robber(s) forces their way into an occupied home, apartment or hotel room to commit the robbery or other crimes. What makes this type of crime so scary is that it violates a personâs private space.
Residential burglars commonly work during the day when a home or apartment is likely to be unoccupied. Home invasion robbers, in contrast, work more often at night and on weekends when homes are occupied. The home invader will sometimes target the resident as well as the actual dwelling itself. Itâs not unheard of for a robber to follow you home based on the value of the car you are driving or the jewelry you are wearing. Some of these criminals may have been in your home before as a delivery person, installer or repair vendor. These types of people rarely work alone and rely on an overwhelming amount of violence to gain initial control and instill fear in their victims. The greatest physical threat usually occurs during the initial sixty seconds of the confrontation and the attackers often come prepared with handcuffs, rope, duct tape, and firearms.
The most common point of attack is through the front door or garage. Itâs typical for home invaders to knock on the door first or ring the doorbell. Theyâre hoping you will simply open the door without question in response to their knock. Unfortunately, many people do just that and make themselves vulnerable.
These are some simple safety tips to memorize or write down:
Make sure all of your exterior doors' locks arenât easily manipulated with force. Install 1-inch deadbolt locks on all exterior doors.
Put a large âwornâ pair size 14 menâs or larger shoes (muddy them up) and leave them on your doorstep. This gives the illusion that a large man may live there but canât bring his dirty shoes inside.
Donât leave extra keys under doormats, potted plants, the little frog or fake rock in your garden or any other obvious outdoor location; thieves will generally find them.
One way to help burglar-proof your glass patio doors is by setting a pipe, metal bar or door stop alarm (#34) in the track of the door slide. The pipe should be the same length as the track.
Keep your garage door shut.
