CHAPTER SEVEN - LIQUID

A teaspoonful of water is all that is needed to drown. Is that an urban myth or not? Lying face down in as little as three centimetres of water or any other liquid and breathing the fluids into the lungs will certainly result in a drowning death. People who have been underwater for several minutes have been resuscitated with no lasting ill-effects.

The liquids under discussion in this chapter will exclude any of a toxic nature.

Drowning should be relatively easy to be made to appear accidental. A winter boat trip on icy water far from land should suffice. The cold will quickly immobilise the victim and they will then sink and drown.

Baths are not ideal because the victim is bound to struggle and put the killer at risk. Unless the victim is unconscious or trussed up, in which case, a bucket of water, a basin or a lavatory bowl might do just as well.

The ducking stool was used to determine whether some unfortunate woman was a witch or not. She was tied to a chair on the end of a long pole. The contraption lowered her into a pond or river and she was held under for a suitably long time. If she did not drown then she was deemed an agent of the Devil and burned at the stake. There are several variations on this theme.

Humans cannot live without water, but consuming too much water causes hyperhydration and drastically alters the body's electrolyte balance. This in turn causes euvolemic hyponatremia, which is an imbalance between salt and water that causes a sharp reduction in the amount of sodium available in the body. Sodium is essential for a number of metabolic processes in the body.

Too much water leads to a dilution of the blood's salt content, which disrupts brain, heart and muscle function. An excessive amount of water could be administered orally or by injection. In fact, almost any chosen liquid could be used and it would not have to be toxic.

This is not a very practical way of killing somebody because huge volumes of liquid will be needed. It would be a time-consuming business and obviously indicative of foul play.

Drowning might kill the victim but disposing of the body is sometimes problematic. Wrapping heavy chains around the torso or encasing the feet in concrete prior to dumping the victim in the sea or a deep river are some of the ways used to achieve both tasks in one go.
