A body pillow or even a sleeping bag can fill in for you when it’s time for your child to make the transition to sleeping on her own. If your daughter is resistant to sleeping without you, try placing such an item in the bed with her to take up the extra space.

Epsom salt baths. Give in the evening, and morning if time permits. Epsom salt promotes calming and acts as a mild chelator, pulling toxins from the body. It also promotes sleep.

Melatonin. Use at night, start with about 1 mg, increase the dose as weight increases. Use the slow-release formulation for night awakenings, standard formulation for trouble falling asleep. This supplement is very safe and easy to go on and off in comparison to sleep drugs. Side benefits include more mellow days (a good night’s sleep does wonders) and antioxidant properties.

WORMS

Say what? Worms as part of a “Daily Life” chapter? In our household, pinworms have been a regular and unwanted house/gut guest. Many of our kids have compromised GI systems. Add in close contact with peers who share similar issues and you have a gut ripe for a pinworm infestation. Pinworms are a common parasite in typical toddlers. I can remember drinking a thick, blood-red medicine as a child for pinworms. They are tiny, ¼-inch-long thread-like worms. The females crawl down into the anus at night to lay their eggs. This crawling creates itching, irritability, and night waking. The worms hatch around the full moon, which also causes behaviors and night waking. Kids scratch, then suck their thumb or finger, and the life cycle continues.

If you suspect pinworms, at night use a flashlight to look at your child’s rectum. If white wiggly threads appear, those are pinworms. Take a piece of clear cellotape and dab-dab-dab around the rectum and bring the tape to your pediatrician. He or she can look under a microscope to see if there are eggs on the tape. This is called “the tape test.” You don’t have to get fancy with fecal tests for pinworms, although fecal tests can be helpful determine if there are other parasites in the intestinal tract.

There are both allopathic and natural treatments for worms, which are notoriously hard to eradicate.
