Day 11 – Thursday 3rd October

7.20 am

Had a terrible night – combination of too much alcohol and too much confusion in my head. Feel no better after standing under Luce’s power shower for twenty minutes – must get myself together. If I’m going to face Laurent, at least I have to look the part and Rob will be home today too, so desperate measures called for.

11.30 am

Managed to sneak out of the house without disturbing Luce and, dressed in track suit and trainers, jogged my way to the park to join the brigade of daily keep-fit enthusiasts already hard at it in the early morning gloom. Had to slow to a brisk walk after ten minutes but gradually felt my brain clear and began to enjoy the feel of London again. Text from Miles – ‘So this is the Lady Chatterley you spoke of Beth! Still laughing…’ I had a smile on my face when I got back, Luce of course looked none the worse for all of yesterday’s antics – just another ordinary day for her!

“Look at you, all rosy and glowing! Smoothie or coffee, or both?”

I downed the smoothie, grabbed a croissant and made a swift exit, saying I needed an hour to get changed and have a bath, if that was ok.

“Treat the place like home darling, I’m out this morning and Rob won’t be home ’til after lunch – enjoy!”

Luce’s place is like living in a hotel, so I made the most of it and, with a bit of effort, managed to transform my tired face and blow-dry my hair into an off-the-face style that suited my mood. I was determined that, when I met Laurent, I was going to appear a confident, woman of the world, far removed from the fragile creature of ten years before. One of my favourite boutiques was just round the corner so I’m heading off to choose a simple under-stated outfit for tonight, I’ll worry about justifying it to Miles later!
