What Is Gas?

“Gas,” or flatus, is formed in the stomach or intestine and is made up of (usually) odorless vapors such as carbon dioxide, oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen, and sometimes methane. Flatulence is gas passed through the anus. Expelling these vapors from the stomach through the mouth is referred to as belching.

Gas can be problematic for those who have physical pain and discomfort when gas is withheld and becomes trapped, causing pressure and pain in the bowel.
