Nick OâMalley
Nick was born on the 5 th of July 1985 in Sheffield.
Prior to joining Arctic Monkeys, Nick was the bassist for fellow indie band The Dodgems.
After original bassist Andy Nicholson announced he wouldnât be joining the band on their 2006 tour of North America, Nick was drafted in as a stop-gap until Andy had recovered.
A week after agreeing to fill in for Andy however, Nick broke his hand whilst walking home from the pub with the roadie from his former band. He was pulled over a high wall and landed on his right hand. Luckily however he could still play his bass and was able to fulfil his contract.
Nick says that he much didnât leave the house when he was learning the repertoire for the tour, playing for pretty much two days solid.
A couple of days before the band played their first gig in North America, Nick got the chance to have a âtest runâ at the Old Blue Last pub in London where they performed a secret gig.
When it was later announced that Andy was in fact to leave the band for good, it was quickly confirmed that Nick would remain as a permanent replacement; he had gelled with the other band members during the tour, and as he had known them prior to this anyway he said it never felt like there was any pressure on either side.
When writing music, Nick has often looked to classic rock for inspiration and has discussed taking cues from Pink Floyd, Cream and Jimi Hendrix; he has also said that listening to artists such as Nick Cave ensures certain styles rub off on you, even if it is at a subconscious level.
In the same way that Mattâs vocals have become more prominent (with him even occasionally taking the lead) as the band has matured, Nickâs voice has also developed. He has welcomed the chance to contribute in this way, even though he once admitted that some of the higher notes still give him a bit of trouble.
After it was put to the band that they had previously vowed never to perform at the BRIT awards or make radio promo clips - but then had recently done both of these, Nick said that they had ânever wanted to do any of that stuffâ because they ânever realised the benefit beforeâ.
