Kamino

When she stepped into the doorway, she heard men’s voices coming from far down the hallway.

“Why does T-Bone have us working with these kooks, anyway?”

“This is your first day in this, so I’ll let you in on a little secret. Ours is to do things like he wants, not to question every little detail. In other words, just do what he says…”

“Yeah, well, I just want to get paid. I’ve got shit I want to buy.”

She took a peek outside. An older guy, maybe thirty years old, and a younger boy, not much older than Garth and Liam, walked in her direction. Both were dressed like normal guys with jeans, short sleeve tees, and the older guy wore sandals rather than sneakers. The older one also carried a shotgun.

“Kid, hasn’t anyone told you what’s going on out there? Didn’t you notice all the dead cars, your dead phone, and the lights being off everywhere, including in this hallway?”

The boy laughed a little. “My brother said T-Bone is the guy who can get us paid. That’s all I need to know…”

They walked for a few moments before noticing her.

“Hey, we’re here to collect you. Bring your little club out to the parking lot, okay?”

Em appeared at the door almost instantly. “We will be there!”

“Yeah, whatever,” the older guy replied. He seemed to be in charge.

Kamino did not like the gun, at all. However, she couldn’t avoid smiling at the younger boy not carrying a weapon. He had wavy blonde hair and wore a starstruck expression she recognized from the few movies with love stories her mom let her watch. If those movies were any indication of real life, he was going to come over to her and try to chat her up.

She was completely uncomfortable with the idea.

Luckily, activities happened around her.

Em came out and broke the gaze of the new boy. “You coming?” she asked Kamino.

“It was nice meeting you,” she said to Em, “but we can’t. I think we’ll keep looking around the school to see if we can find any help. You said everyone went home, though?”

“I think so. They did an assembly in the gym, then everyone left at the same time. All gone.”

Kamino side-eyed the flirty boy. He was still a few doors down the hall, but he wasn’t coming toward her, reminding her she wasn’t in a movie.

What a relief.

Maybe she could ask the cute boy to use his phone. Then her role in the film would be to chat up the boy…was that allowed? Why was she even thinking of such things?

Garth and Liam noticed the two guys right away when they came out of the room with all the girls, but their main concern was moving out of the way to let the girls’ club come through. They watched all of them file out and walk away, neither aware of her moment with Blondie.

“Where do you think they’re going?” Liam asked quietly.

“You are welcome to find out,” Em said to Kamino.

“But not them?” she asked, meaning her two friends.
