Embolization can cause a number of side effects; thus, some patients are admitted to the hospital for a day or two. In general, the magnitude of the side effects is proportional to the amount of tumor that is destroyed. If you have a large tumor, you can expect to have a number of side effects if it was completely embolized because of the amount of dead tissue that results from the embolization. Dead tissue releases a lot of toxic substances into your bloodstream; these toxins can make you sick. The most common side effect is nausea. This can be controlled with special medication, but you may not wish to eat for a day or so. Pain can occur, and you will receive pain medication for relief. In the time period following the embolization, you may have a fever, and your doctors may notice an increase in some of the blood levels of liver enzymes. All of these side effects are collectively called post-embolization syndrome and should resolve with a few days to several weeks. Rarely, embolization will cause a problem with your heart or kidney function. Another unusual complication is the formation of an infection in the dead tumor tissue. This is called an abscess, which is treated with antibiotics. In rare situations, you may need a drain placed into the infection. Also, the tube that was placed into the artery may cause complications. Bleeding can occur at the puncture site and form a large bruise called a hematoma or pseudoaneurysm. Occasionally, a patient may require an operation to repair the blood vessel if it was damaged. The addition of chemotherapy to the embolization, also called chemoembolization, will of course add potential side effects from the chemotherapy.
