58. Modern Physics

You will have heard about the Higgs boson and the massive experiments that have been set up to discover it. The Higgs boson is most probably the last missing link in the theory of everything that will explain our entire universe perfectly, right from the moment the universe was created to the point when it will be destroyed. In fact, many claim this new physics will connect science to religion in ways we have not yet imagined. So, what is fondly called ‘modern’ physics is actually becoming the real physics of the twenty-first century, and very soon, maybe in just a few years, I think modern physics will be what is called physics and the everything else will become ‘classical’ or ‘old’ physics. Modern physics is very important for us to understand, more as a topic of current affairs and general knowledge than as a JEE subject.

Finally, modern physics and general physics are both equally necessary for the serious JEE contender. Students need modern physics to have the foundations to get into advanced topics in college. General physics prevents you from becoming too theoretical and ignoring some of the most wonderful experiments that lay the foundations of physics itself. Thus, each section of the syllabus has a reason to exist and an awareness of that reason will set the course for your preparation.

The most important thing to remember about modern physics is that the topic is vast and very complicated. So, extra care is taken to keep it simple and direct for JEE purposes. Hence, from the JEE perspective this topic will consist of mostly direct questions around the basic concepts and formulae. So make sure you score full marks in this section. All you need to do is go point by point according to the syllabus, making crisp notes on the key concepts and formulae, and revise it all thoroughly before the exam.
