Bottom-Line Lesson

Although there is so much more involved in making a homeownership decision than just the Money Factor, choosing whether to buy or rent your next home is fundamentally a financial decision.

How the American Dream Really Works

Why does the idea of the "American Dream" touch us at our core? Is it wish fulfillment, a get-ahead ambition shared by most of us, or a term hyped by smart housing marketers? It is all that and more. The American Dream is as old as the founding of the nation. A missionary in the eighteenth century had this to say about Americans as he toured the colonies:

The American can never flourish on leased lands. They have too much enterprise to...remain tenants.[1]

Most of us have a personal mission to have a home we own. We strive to "make a home" for ourselves and our loved ones as the place we want to "hang out," "putter around," or "just do things together" when and as we please. We also seek the security, social recognition, and financial rewards that homeownership bestows. With so much symbolism, tradition, intimacy, and social activity connected with our home, there is little doubt that our desire to become homeowners crosses every cultural, social, and economic boundary. However, the key value the missionary noticed about Americans so long ago was their enterprise.[2]
