Tips for Keeping Your Routine Ironclad
Make sure each task is measurable and achievable. Assign a length of time to your tasks, and make sure what youâve established is doable. For example, ten minutes of meditation does not mean you have to execute the meditation with perfection, but you do need to sit still for those ten minutes and try. Those ten minutes are the task, not the perfection. The timeline makes it measurable. If, over time, you find you want to meditate longer, start increasing your time each day by one minute. That makes the task at hand achievable.
Start small. Remember how you eat an elephant? One bite at a time. Each of your tasks is a bite of that elephant. You donât want to drain yourself with each task, or youâll never make it through the day. If you keep the tasks small, they will amount to big achievements later on.
Donât wait. We all have excuses for not getting to this or that during our day. Believe me, Iâve heard every excuse there is. The washing machine broke. My shoulder hurts. I ate too much. I ate too little. Itâs raining. Itâs too sunny. When you make excuses, the only person youâre letting down is you. Remember rule 3, Commit to No Bullshit.
Align your routine with your values. Lots of people have started routines and then stopped. Why? Because they donât attach it to a value. They donât know why they set the routine in the first place, other than âWell, Joe De Sena said so.â Thatâs not good enough if you want it to stick. Go back to your values, those principles that you picked earlier in the book. See if you can associate your morning routine with a value. Hard work is one of mine, and getting up before dawn each and every day is hard work. Maybe your value is honor. Does spending ten minutes scrolling through your Instagram feed first thing in the morning align with that value? Probably not. Instead, pick something that does, like creating a gratitude list.
Use structure. Dr. L recommends a template that can help with establishing and maintaining your routine. She uses one she calls the three Bs. Every morning ask: What is one thing I can do for my brain? One thing I can do for my body? And what is the next best step I can take toward a goal I am working on? Brainâmeditation, bodyâburpees, next best stepâget that first email off to my team. Bingo! If you donât use the three Bs, find another way to organize your routine so that it doesnât feel haphazard and chaotic. If it makes sense, you will be more consistent with it.
Take the tech out. Nothing in your morning routine should involve technology. Stay away from phones, TV, and iPads. Technology is an immediate distraction that leads to further distractions. If you include checking your email in your morning routine, what happens if youâre notified of a sale for those
