Taking legal action—is it overreacting?

Imagine your father (or any adult) just started a new job. He's walking down the hallway one day when suddenly Larry, from accounting, shoves him into the wall and calls him a loser. Maybe Larry hates the way your dad does spread­sheets. Whatever. What do you think your dad would do? Would he sulk away, feeling bad about himself? Avoid the men's room and caf­eteria because Larry might be there? Doubtful. In the adult world, human resources, lawyers, and probably the police would be involved right away. Charges would be filed. Larry would be fired. The situation would be resolved.

When a person physically harms you or even threatens to do so, you are protected by law. If your school won't or can't take care of the prob­lem, you and your parents should consider con­sulting a lawyer. A letter from an attorney can work wonders with the school and the bully's parents.
