While crafting compelling sentences and paragraphs that are substantive is certainly more important than mastering writing software, it’s worthwhile to learn how to use your tools. Doing so will make your writing process easier.

Many writers complain about difficult software, but the software isn’t difficult at all. You can fire up a word-processing program and start typing and that’s easy enough, but when you get into formatting and structuring a document, there’s a learning curve. Once you learn how to use a piece of software, it becomes quite easy, even if it still presents annoying quirks at times. And once you master one word-processing program, it will be easier to master another, although there will be a new learning curve.
