The fruits are high in calories, are sticky sweet, and excellent survival food when combined with hickory nuts.

But don’t make the mistake of eating one picked off the tree instead of the ground. You’ll never do it twice. The ones still hanging are not ripe enough to eat yet and will always fall to the ground when ready. Unripe fruits, even though they look perfectly ready, will cause your mouth to pucker up tight. It’s the astringency that does it, and the feeling is some kind of unpleasant.

Not only is it unpleasant, but if you were to eat many (and I have NO idea how someone might do that chore) unripe fruits, it can cause a peculiar problem. The tannins in the unripe fruit combined with the stomach acids cause something called a “foodball”, an indigestible lump. According to the article at Wikipedia, this foodball can be dissolved by drinking Coca-Cola. I would assume any carbonated soft drink would do it, but I’m not sure about that.

While the ripe fruit is a calorie dense edible, the green fruit, wood and leaves are useful, too.

The bark on a mature persimmon tree has a unique pebbly look to it, similar to old dogwood trees.
